…. HOW TO FUND THE PROPOSED UNDERGROUND RAIL LINK

  1. Absolutely, Bernard! The neolib idea of ‘user pays’, or privatising our freeways, ports, airports and public transport, now (God forbid!) railway overpasses, is wearing a bit thin. With some of the tollways now falling over, it’s proven crass nonsense. They can’t bring themselves accept that economic rent represents community. “Community? What’s that, but communism!” Idiots!

  2. Excellent idea.

Another idea is that all existing State Land Tax Revenue be ‘hypothecated’ to infrastructure investment, guided by the rise in land values and consequent rise in land values and land revenue.

Thus, a ‘virtuous circle’ of investment, value rise and value capture could be created. In fact I see this as a central component of ‘neo-socialism’, if we are looking for an alternative to the horrors and failures of neoliberalism.

China spends 8.5% of its GDP on infrastructure, “well above the developing-country norm of 2-4% of GDP.”

    Infrastructure is civilization.
